About the Brittany
The Brittany is a dog of moderate size and ample personality. These dogs are quick-witted, friendly, and enthusiastic to be active with their people. Brittanys require plenty of mental and physical exercise.
While each dog is different, in general, they are not a “mellow” breed — they like to GO. They do have a natural hunting instinct, however, homes can find many other outlets for fun and exercise (agility, hiking, etc.) with their Brittany.
-
Brittanys are a well-tempered breed, who love their people and tend to love all people. They are a magnificent addition to an active family. As with all dogs, they should be supervised around young children.
-
Yes. The AKC labels them as “moderate” shedders. While Brittanys aren’t a top shedding breed, don’t be fooled — you’ll find white hair around the house.
Brittany coats are known for their natural dirt-slicking nature. A muddy Brittany, left out to dry and run around a bit, can come in the house looking white and clean! They tend to be clean, low-odor, and only need occasional baths when not out running in the fields.
-
Brittanys are not particularly known as “barkers”. I would classify them as “average” barkers, who can dial it up or down with household training.
All of ours tend to alert bark and occasionally “talk” to us when they adamantly want something.

No.
I do not believe a Brittany MUST be in a hunting home to live a happy and fulfilled life. There are so many other activities and sports out there. Your Brittany will be happiest doing something active with you. Brittanys excel at Agility, Obedience, Rally, Fast CAT, Barn Hunt, Flyball, Dock Diving, Scentwork and more! However, if you ever get a chance to watch your dog do what they were bred to do… Do It. Seeing Brittanys out in the field hunting birds is one of the greatest things I’ve done with my dogs. It is their favorite thing - and so much of it just comes naturally.
-
Brittanys originally were called “Brittany Spaniels.
However, because of their hunting style - which is that of a pointer, rather than a spaniel - the name was changed to “Brittany” in 1982. -

A LITTLE ABOUT ME…
Sadie is a petite (18”) and well-proportioned girl with beautiful movement and structure. She is a sweet, spitfire of a munchkin and has had an impressive start to her show career.
Sadie finished her AKC Championship exclusively with specialty majors, including RWB at the 2022 Brittany Nationals, with limited showing. She is over half-way to her Grand Championship and continues to be shown selectively.
Outside of the show ring, Sadie loves curling up on your lap and chasing squirrels and critters out in the yard.
